 It must have been a tense night for players at the World Poker Tour Championship. The chip leader, three-time title winner and this year’s favorite, Gus Hansen, was at the final table. No one could have possibly predicted that it would be the other full tilt professional who would be taking the prize for first place this year.
In an interview made shortly after his victory, David said: “This is the best win so far. I have four WSOP bracelets and a Tournament of Champions title but this one is the best I’ve had so far. My strategy throughout the game was to let Gus do all the hard work and knock everybody else out and I would just play heads-up with him. I was thinking that if I placed second or third there was still some good money to be had.”
Other players at the final table were Jeff King, who ended up in 6th place, Tommy Le in 5th place, Cory Carroll in 4th place and John ‘Kicker’ Roveto in 3rd place. The winning of David came as a surprise not only for the crowd watching the game but also for Hansen, who walks over as if he were in a daze as David wins the final hand.
Chiu got to take home the sum of $3,389,140, along with two bracelets (one from the casino and one from the WPTC) and a trophy which will probably stand proudly in this man’s shelf. By winning, he has also assured his entry into next season’s World Poker Tournament Championship.
